Swan Lake
Tonight I went to see Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake (http://www.swanlaketour.com/) at Sadler Well's Theatre. IT was the best theatre I have been to in several years and only 18 pounds too boot! Matthew Bourne has taken Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake score and twisted the genders with all the delicate feminine tutu'ed swans inverted into big muscular men. This was a very modern tail of rejection of difference by society with a particular spotlight on homosexuality and mental instability but brought together as a cohesive and classic story of star crossed love. The Production values were excellent. I particularly loved the use of lighting to really communicate the princes decent into insanity. The costumes were great and all the dancers superb. It was funny and honest and cruel and very human.
5 stars!
